Pilot Light

JKLTip What could you cut out of your life that doesn’t bring real value, yet steals energy from your pilot light?

On an electric fireplace, gas stove, or water heater there is a pilot light, a small gas flame continuously burning to light the larger burner when needed. When we think of ‘burnout’ it’s as though our pilot light won’t turn on. We can’t light the big fire, we can’t do the work that matters because we are completely burned out. Does “burn out” exist? It certainly does, but the definition varies and there are many variables. If we truly love what we are doing then it takes some simple systems surrounding nutrition, sleep, and mindset to at least keep our pilot light on (and coffee)

There’s a lot of controversy, or nontroversy, surrounding the “hustle hard” culture. We don’t have to look far on social media platforms to see “hustle” or a deeper version, my all time favorite, “sleep is for suckers”. 50 Cent took it a step further with “get rich, or die tryin’”. The debate acts as if these are two distinct camps; the wellness, yoga, rest camp vs. the hustle, burn the midnight oil, sacrifice camp. While we can all agree a certain balance is needed, if we put hand outs, hand me downs and lottery aside, then we have to achieve for ourselves. If we are to create for ourselves it will be through hard work, focus, and resilience

If we want to be able to add more rest and relaxation, then we need to find ways to manage time to put in the hard work. In reality, we need to know ourselves and identify what keeps us going. Over a third of the way through my career, I have always had a side hustle, I have always pushed my mind and body as hard as I can to be the best I can be and I’m yet to be burned out, (I may get close at times), but I think it’s because of my relentless focus on progress and gratitude that my pilot light always burns. Would I love to hit the beach and the golf course more often? To take my daughters to more movies and road trips? Absolutely, but society is set up in a way where that will come, in due time, with hard work along the way. So long as we keep our pilot light lit, we can’t burn out, and when it’s go time we can flip the switch to that big, go get ’em flame.
